Heraklion is not only the business centre of Crete, this
is after all by far the largest island in Greece, it is a central launching
point for much travel within the island. Knossos is a few minutes from Heraklion
by bus, numerous villages inland reveal the sweeping rural scenery of the
island. To either side of the city the beach resorts at Ammoudara,
Hersonisos,Malia, Gouves and Kokkini Hani are home to many of the largest
hotels. Bars, restaurants and shops abound and clubs pump music and drinks well
into the night.
The south coast opposite Heraklion offers the visitor town of
Matala, and many smaller coastal villages. Inland villages such as Anogia,
Archanes, Axos, Zaros are all well worth visiting for their unique histories.
Zaros has great mountain surrounds and old villlages to tour, yet is a short
trip for a dip in the sea.
